The seven deadly sins, also known as the capital vices or cardinal sins, is a classification of vices (part of Christian ethics) that has been used since early Christian times to educate and instruct Christians concerning fallen humanity's tendency to sin. In the currently recognized version, the sins are usually given as wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony.
In the Book of Proverbs 6:16-19, among the verses traditionally associated with King Solomon, it states that the Lord specifically regards "six things the Lord hateth, and seven that are an abomination unto Him", namely,
- A proud look
- A lying tongue
- Hands that shed innocent blood
- A heart that devises wicked plots
- Feet that are swift to run into mischief
- A deceitful witness that uttereth lies
- Him that soweth discord among brethren
Lust
Lust is an intense desire. It is a general term for desire. Therefore lust could involve the intense desire of money, food, fame, or power as well.
Gluttony
In Christianity, it is considered a sin if the excessive desire for food causes it to be withheld from the needy.
Because of these scripts, gluttony can be interpreted as selfishness; essentially placing concern with one's own interests above the well-being or interests of others.
- Praepropere – eating too soon
- Laute – eating too expensively
- Nimis – eating too much
- Ardenter – eating too eagerly
- Studiose – eating too daintily
- Forente – eating wildly
Greed
As defined outside of Christian writings, greed is an inordinate desire to acquire or possess more than one needs, especially with respect tomaterial wealth.[16]
Greed (Latin, avaritia), also known as avarice, cupidity or covetousness, is, like lust and gluttony, a sin of excess. However, greed (as seen by the church) is applied to a very excessive or rapacious desire and pursuit of material possessions. Thomas Aquinas wrote, "Greed is a sin against God, just as all mortal sins, in as much as man condemns things eternal for the sake of temporal things." In Dante's Purgatory, the penitents were bound and laid face down on the ground for having concentrated too much on earthly thoughts. Scavenging andhoarding of materials or objects, theft and robbery, especially by means of violence, trickery, or manipulation of authority are all actions that may be inspired by Greed. Such misdeeds can include simony, where one attempts to purchase or sell sacraments, including Holy Orders and, therefore, positions of authority in the Church hierarchy.
Sloth
Sloth has also been defined as a failure to do things that one should do. By this definition, evil exists when good men fail to act.
While sloth is sometimes defined as physical laziness, spiritual laziness is emphasized.
Edmund Burke (1729-1797) wrote "No man, who is not inflamed by vain-glory into enthusiasm, can flatter himself that his single, unsupported, desultory, unsystematic endeavours are of power to defeat the subtle designs and united Cabals of ambitious citizens."When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle."
Wrath
Wrath is the only sin not necessarily associated with selfishness or self-interest, although one can of course be wrathful for selfish reasons, such as jealousy (closely related to the sin of envy). Dante described vengeance as "love of justice perverted to revenge and spite". In its original form, the sin of wrath also encompassed anger pointed internally as well as externally. Thus suicide was deemed as the ultimate, albeit tragic, expression of hatred directed inwardly, a final rejection of God's gifts. Also known as "rage", may be described as inordinate and uncontrolled feelings of hatred and anger. Wrath, in its purest form, presents with self-destructiveness, violence, and hate that may provoke feuds that can go on for centuries. Wrath may persist long after the person who did another a grievous wrong is dead. Feelings of anger can manifest in different ways, including impatience, revenge, and self-destructive behavior, such as drug .
Envy
Envy can be directly related to the Ten Commandments, specifically, "Neither shall you desire... anything that belongs to your neighbour." Dante defined this as "a desire to deprive other men of theirs". In Dante's Purgatory, the punishment for the envious is to have their eyes sewn shut with wire because they have gained sinful pleasure from seeing others brought low. Aquinas described envy as "sorrow for another's good".
Pride
It is identified as believing that one is essentially better than others, failing to acknowledge the accomplishments of others, and excessive admiration of the personal self (especially holding self out of proper position toward God). Dante's definition was "love of self perverted to hatred and contempt for one's neighbour". In Jacob Bidermann's medieval miracle play,Cenodoxus, pride is the deadliest of all the sins and leads directly to the damnation of the titulary famed Parisian doctor. In perhaps the best-known example, the story of Lucifer, pride (his desire to compete with God) was what caused his fall from Heaven, and his resultant transformation into Satan. In Dante's Divine Comedy, the penitents are burdened with stone slabs on their necks which force them to keep their heads bowed
Colour palette was very important in each of the shots as on my research I found that different colours depicted different moods, or sins. For gluttony. For lust I chose red as it a seductive colour and the colour of love. For pride I chose gold as I wanted to depict money and things which cost alot of money. For envy I chose green because of the saying, green with envy. For Greed I chose multi coloured to depict alot going on at once. For sloth I chose blue as it denotes calmness which can lead to laziness and a lack of effort. For wrath I chose purple as its a strong colour and could be used for confusion or anger. For greed I chose pink as I feel at a certain age young girls can be greedy with lots of thing especially girly makeup and accessories etc.
For greed pink was used and the food props were desserts such as cream cakes, doughnuts cakes and milkshake. I feel these items flowed with the colour palette of the accessories which were betsey johnson inspired.
For sloth the food prop used was glacier sweets which were in a blue jar and also spread amongst the bag. The accessories used were inspired by giorgio armani and christopher kane with the holographic accesories and blue colour palette
For the green with envy shoot I obviously had to use apples which i decided to coat in black chocolate to tie the black in the accessories together in with the rest of the shoot. I also found green liquorice sweets and green lime jam. The items were bright and colourful and inspired by the celine collection .
For the pride shoot I went with the gold theme and used champagne along with chocolate which was packaged in gold foil such as ferro roche and a big chocolate egg. The accessories were also gold and inspired by the dolce and gabanna collection.
For the lust shoot I chose to go with the red colour palette as I feel it depicts lust really well and is an obvious choice. The accessories used are inspired by the collection from saint laurent which uses alot of red and black. The foods I decided to use were strawberries dipped in black choclate as I feel these are associated with lust and I also used black sweets poured out with the lipstick amongst them. For the setting I experimented with lighting a candle as I wanted to give it a more evening vibe compared to the other shots.
For wrath I picked the colour purple as the colour of background. All the items include studs and spikes to depict the sin of wrath. The foods used in this shoot were purple liquorice sweets. The accessories were inspired by the collection by yohji yamamoto which depicts vengeance so I feel this ties in.
Mcdonalds is the food prop in this shot, I chose accessories which flowed with the colour palette and also had a strong valentino vibe because of the arabian accessories such as the scarf and the earrings.
My thoughts on the shoot were that although I liked the items I used as I felt they reflected the collections for spring summer well and I liked the idea and concept I came up with I don't feel as if I got the outcome I wanted or had in my head.
Although I Liked the idea of the 7 deadly sins as different concepts but felt i wanted to do develop on the narrative so i played with ideas on gluttony and different ways to explores that or focus on a few of the deadly sins. I thought about gluttony and the buffet idea and the way you stuff yourself. This then led me onto think of buffets I had previously been to and one that really stood out to me and has always been my favourite is red hot world buffet where you are able to eat lots of different cuisines all in one go and try an array of different dishes all under one roof. I would like to explore all different cuisines in picture concept. As I have done alot of research on global cuisines I feel like I could possible have a better outcome if I attempted to use this idea to create a concept and narrative for a second shoot.
